The Story
Gold Star Pokémon are widely considered the most beautiful and collectible subset in the history of the Pokémon TCG. Printed between 2004 and 2007 across several EX-era expansions, these cards feature alternate-color (shiny) artwork that extends to the very edges of the card — a design choice that was revolutionary at the time and has never been replicated in quite the same way.
There are 27 Gold Star cards in total: 18 released in English booster packs across sets like EX Team Rocket Returns, EX Deoxys, EX Legend Maker, EX Holon Phantoms, EX Dragon Frontiers, and EX Power Keepers, plus 2 cards exclusive to POP Series 5 packs (Umbreon ★ and Espeon ★) and 7 Japanese-exclusive Play Promo Gold Stars that were available only through the Pokémon Players Club points system.
The pull rate for Gold Stars was approximately 1 in 72 packs, making them significantly harder to pull than typical holos. Combined with the fact that many EX-era sets had relatively low print runs compared to modern standards, high-grade Gold Stars have become extremely scarce. A PSA 10 Gold Star Charizard from EX Dragon Frontiers regularly sells for $40,000-50,000, while the POP Series Umbreon and Espeon can exceed that.
What elevates Gold Stars beyond mere rarity is the artwork. Each card was illustrated by some of the TCG's most talented artists — Masakazu Fukuda's dynamic poses, Kouki Saitou's detailed compositions, and Mitsuhiro Arita's iconic style all appear across the set. The alternate-color concept gives artists creative freedom to reimagine familiar Pokémon in striking new palettes, and the full-art-style border treatment makes every Gold Star feel like a premium collectible.
