The Regi Trio Enters the Shrine

EX Legend Maker brought the Legendary Titans into the Gold Star pantheon. Regice, Regirock, and Registeel — the ancient golems sealed away in Hoenn's caves — represent a unique chapter in Gold Star history. They're the least conventionally popular Gold Stars, which makes them some of the most interesting from a collector's perspective.

Regice's shiny form is subtle — a slight shift in ice crystalline coloring — but Fukuda makes it work through sheer composition. The Iceberg Pokémon's angular, geometric body pushes against the card frame with an imposing stillness that contrasts with the more dynamic poses of other Gold Stars.

The Regi trio occupies a fascinating niche: not the most popular Pokémon, which keeps prices lower, but essential for set completionists and beloved by collectors who appreciate the ancient-golem aesthetic.

The Regi Gold Stars are the sleepers of the collection — overlooked by casual collectors, essential for completionists.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the Pokémon TCG — a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the Pokémon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first Pokémon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk — particularly James Brown.
