Where It All Began

Mudkip ★ holds a unique distinction: it's one of the first three Gold Star cards ever printed. Released in November 2004 as part of EX Team Rocket Returns, the Hoenn starter trio introduced a brand-new rarity tier that would define the entire EX era.

The shiny form swaps Mudkip's blue for a vivid purple, and Fukuda's artwork captures the little Water-type mid-leap with joyful energy. Despite a modest 50 HP, the card's significance is entirely about collector status — this is where the Gold Star legend began.

At roughly 1 per 2 booster boxes, pulling any Gold Star was a genuine event. Team Rocket Returns product has become increasingly scarce, making raw pulls essentially impossible at reasonable prices.

Before Mudkip, Torchic, and Treecko, there were no Gold Stars. These three cards launched the most prestigious rarity tier in Pokémon TCG history.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the Pokémon TCG — a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the Pokémon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first Pokémon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk — particularly James Brown.

★ Collector's Note

As one of the original three Gold Stars, Mudkip holds historical significance beyond its Pokémon popularity. A great entry-level Gold Star.
