The Last Card in the First Set

Treecko β˜… is card #109 of 109 β€” literally the final card in the first set to ever feature Gold Stars. Alongside Mudkip and Torchic, it completed the Hoenn starter trio and closed out a set that would be remembered for introducing the most prestigious rarity tier in TCG history.

The shiny form replaces standard green with a deeper teal. Fukuda captures the Grass-type in a characteristically agile pose, as if ready to spring from a tree branch.

Of the three originals, Treecko trades at similar levels to Mudkip and well below Torchic. For new collectors entering the Gold Star space, the Hoenn trio is the most accessible entry point.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the PokΓ©mon TCG β€” a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the PokΓ©mon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first PokΓ©mon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk β€” particularly James Brown.
