The Moonlight Pokémon Reaches the Summit

Umbreon ★ from POP Series 5 is the most valuable Gold Star card in existence and one of the most expensive English Pokémon cards outside the Base Set. In late 2025, a PSA 10 copy sold for approximately $48,500 — placing it firmly in the upper echelon of the entire hobby.

Everything that makes Espeon ★ rare applies doubly to Umbreon. The same POP Series 5 distribution scarcity, the same tiny 2-card packs, the same league-only availability. But Umbreon adds something Espeon doesn't: it's the single most popular Eeveelution in the Pokémon franchise. The "Moonbreon" phenomenon from modern sets proved that Umbreon demand is virtually bottomless.

Fukuda's artwork shows the shiny Umbreon — blue rings glowing instead of yellow — prowling forward with its body extending beyond the card frame. The Darkness-type aesthetic, combined with the golden foil of the Gold Star treatment, creates one of the most visually stunning cards ever printed.

The card is #17 of 17 — the absolute last card in POP Series 5, the last Gold Star ever printed in the English TCG. It's not just a card; it's the period at the end of the Gold Star sentence.

Card 17 of 17. The last Gold Star ever printed. The most expensive Gold Star ever sold. Umbreon is how the era ended — at the absolute peak.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the Pokémon TCG — a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the Pokémon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first Pokémon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk — particularly James Brown.

★ Collector's Note

This is the holy grail of Gold Stars. PSA 10 copies appear at auction maybe once or twice a year. Even raw copies in played condition command thousands. If you see one at a reasonable price, it won't be there long.
