The Psychic Master in Gold

Alakazam ★ is one of the most visually striking Gold Stars in the series. The Psi Pokémon's shiny form — a warm pink-purple instead of the standard yellow — gives Alakazam an ethereal, almost mystical appearance perfectly suited to its psychic nature.

At 100 HP, Alakazam ★ was one of the most powerful Gold Stars. This was fitting for a Pokémon that had been a dominant force since Generation I — one of the "big four" Psychics alongside Mewtwo, Gengar, and Hypno.

Alakazam holds a special place in Gen I nostalgia. The Pokémon that required a trade to evolve, a staple of competitive play, and one of the original 151 — Alakazam has a deep fanbase that ensures strong demand for premium cards.

Pink Alakazam radiates psychic energy even in foil form — this is one of Fukuda's most otherworldly Gold Stars.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the Pokémon TCG — a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the Pokémon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first Pokémon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk — particularly James Brown.

★ Collector's Note

Alakazam Gold Star is a favorite among Gen I purists. Its lower PSA 10 pop compared to the beasts makes it a strong collector's piece.
