The Legendary Beasts Unleashed

EX Unseen Forces brought the Johto legendary beasts into the Gold Star spotlight. Entei β˜…, Raikou β˜…, and Suicune β˜… formed the third wave, and for many collectors, they represent the most accessible entry point into vintage Gold Star collecting.

Entei's shiny form swaps the standard brown-and-red for a richer, more saturated palette. Fukuda captures the Volcano PokΓ©mon in a powerful, earthbound stance β€” fitting for a creature born from the flames of the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City.

The beasts trio has higher PSA 10 populations than most other Gold Stars, making them the most budget-friendly option for collectors who want authentic EX-era Gold Stars without five-figure price tags. But "budget" is relative β€” even these have seen significant appreciation.

The legendary beasts Gold Stars are the gateway drug of Gold Star collecting β€” accessible enough to start, addictive enough to keep going.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the PokΓ©mon TCG β€” a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the PokΓ©mon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first PokΓ©mon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk β€” particularly James Brown.

β˜… Collector's Note

The beasts are the most common Gold Stars in PSA 10, making them ideal for collectors entering the space. EX Unseen Forces had a slightly larger print run than earlier EX sets.
