The Sun Pokémon From the Shadows

Espeon ★ from POP Series 5 is the most valuable Gold Star card of all time by some measures. The POP (Pokémon Organized Play) Series was not sold in stores — these tiny 2-card booster packs were distributed exclusively through Pokémon league events, tournaments, and select retail promotions.

The distribution method created extreme scarcity. POP Series 5 contained only 17 cards total, and the odds of pulling either Espeon or Umbreon from a 2-card pack were astronomical. Far fewer POP5 packs were opened than any main-set booster box.

Espeon's shiny form is a vivid green instead of the standard lavender — a dramatic transformation that Fukuda renders beautifully, with the Sun Pokémon's forked tail and gem radiating psychic energy beyond the frame.

With only about 22 PSA 10 copies known to exist, Espeon ★ is genuinely rare in a way that most "rare" cards aren't. When one appears at auction, it's an event.

Only ~22 PSA 10 Espeon Gold Stars exist. This isn't artificial scarcity — it's genuine rarity from an era when nobody knew these would matter.

Masakazu Fukuda is the sole illustrator behind every Gold Star card in the Pokémon TCG — a distinction no other artist holds for any comparable card class. Before entering the Pokémon world, Fukuda spent eleven years in the video game industry handling character design and main graphics at game production companies throughout the 1990s.

His first Pokémon TCG illustrations appeared in 2003, but it was the Gold Star assignment that cemented his legacy. Fukuda deliberately exaggerates angles and colors in his Gold Star work, creating a dynamic, almost kinetic energy that makes each card feel alive. He describes his style as "cute, colorful, and vibrant."

His influences are fascinatingly eclectic: mecha designer Hajime Katoki, manga artists Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell). Outside of art, he's an avid motorcyclist, wide-angle photographer, and a fan of electronic music and late 1960s funk — particularly James Brown.

★ Collector's Note

POP Series 5 Gold Stars are in a different league of scarcity from main-set Gold Stars. Expect to wait months or years for a PSA 10 to come to market. Always verify authenticity — fakes exist.
