The Story
Before Gold Stars, before full arts, before modern shiny vaults — there were the Shining cards. The first two — Shining Magikarp and Shining Gyarados — debuted in Neo Revelation (2001) as secret rares, making them the very first alternate-color Pokémon in the TCG. Neo Destiny (2002) then expanded the concept with 8 more. While the Neo Revelation Shinings appear as standard holos with alternate-color artwork, the Neo Destiny Shinings introduced a striking treatment where the Pokémon itself is rendered in holographic foil in its shiny coloring. All Shining cards come in both 1st Edition and Unlimited printings, with 1st Edition commanding significantly higher premiums.
Across both sets, there are 10 Shining cards total. Shining Magikarp (66/64) and Shining Gyarados (65/64) are the Neo Revelation secret rares, both illustrated by Ken Sugimori. A double holo error variant exists for both cards, where they received twice the normal holographic foil — these error versions command significant premiums. The 8 Neo Destiny Shinings — Celebi, Charizard, Kabutops, Mewtwo, Noctowl, Raichu, Steelix, and Tyranitar — are numbered 106-113/105 as secret rares, with a pull rate of approximately 1 per booster box.
Shining Charizard is the undisputed centerpiece of the set. As the first alternate-color Charizard ever printed, it holds a special place in collecting history. PSA 10 copies of 1st Edition Shining Charizard regularly sell for over $20,000, with prices trending upward as the nostalgia-driven collector base continues to grow. Shining Tyranitar and Shining Mewtwo round out the top tier, with Shining Raichu also commanding strong premiums.
The artwork across the Shining set is remarkable. Five of the eight cards were illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida, whose dynamic compositions bring the alternate-color Pokémon to life. The remaining three were drawn by Ken Sugimori, the original character designer for Pokémon, lending them an extra layer of provenance. Together, they created a set that feels cohesive yet varied — each card is unmistakably "Shining" while being its own distinct piece of art.
