The King of Gold Stars
Ask a hundred serious collectors to name the single most iconic Gold Star card β the answer is near-unanimous: Rayquaza β from EX Deoxys. This is the card that defines the entire Gold Star era. The highest prices. The most excitement at auction. The top of virtually every tier list.
The appeal is multifaceted. Rayquaza is arguably the most popular legendary in collecting circles β a sky-dwelling dragon whose black shiny form is universally regarded as one of the best shiny colorations in PokΓ©mon history. Fukuda shows the serpentine dragon coiling dramatically, its body breaking free of the card frame.
Card #107 of 107 gives it secret rare numbering. Like its set-mates Latias and Latios, it features multi-energy attacks, and its 90 HP was the highest of any Gold Star at the time.
In PSA 10, Rayquaza β has traded for nearly $50,000 in recent sales. The population is relatively low in top grade β EX Deoxys cardstock was prone to edge whitening β and demand from both set completionists and Rayquaza enthusiasts keeps competition fierce.
For many collectors, this is the ultimate goal: the crown jewel of the crown jewel set. Acquiring a Rayquaza β in any grade is a milestone; in PSA 10, it's a genuine achievement.
