The Very First Shiny
Shining Magikarp holds a unique distinction in the Pokémon TCG: alongside Shining Gyarados, it was the very first alternate-color (shiny) Pokémon card ever printed. Released as a secret rare in Neo Revelation in 2001, it predates the more famous Neo Destiny Shinings by an entire set.
Unlike the Neo Destiny Shinings, which feature holographic foil directly on the Pokémon's body, Shining Magikarp appears as a standard holo card but with the Pokémon rendered in its alternate shiny coloring — a golden Magikarp instead of the usual red-orange. This more subtle approach to the shiny concept makes it a fascinating historical piece.
A notable variant exists: the double holo error, where the card received twice the normal amount of holographic foil during printing. These error versions are significantly rarer and more valuable than standard copies, adding an extra layer of collectibility to an already scarce card.
