The Dark Mountain in Muted Fury

Shining Tyranitar is the second most valuable Neo Destiny card and one of the most visually distinctive Shinings in the series. The shiny form uses muted, darker colors — a tan-and-brown palette that replaces the standard green — creating a Tyranitar that looks like it was carved from desert sandstone.

The artwork is deceptively subtle. In scans and photos, Shining Tyranitar can look underwhelming — but in person, under natural light, the holographic treatment brings out details that digital images miss. This is a card that rewards physical ownership.

As the last card in the Neo Destiny secret rare sequence (#113 of 105), Tyranitar closes the set with appropriate menace. The Armor Pokémon has maintained strong demand across all eras of the TCG — Shining, Dark, and modern Ultra Rares alike.

At $11,400 for 1st Edition PSA 10, Tyranitar is the second most expensive Shining after Charizard. Its pseudo-legendary status and enduring popularity make it a strong long-term hold.

Shining Tyranitar rewards patience — it looks muted in photos but comes alive in your hands. The card equivalent of a slow-burning masterpiece.

Ken Sugimori is the original character designer for Pokémon, responsible for creating the visual identity of nearly every Generation I and II Pokémon. His art defined the franchise's aesthetic.

His Shining cards use clean, bold compositions with his signature style — the same hand that designed every Pokémon in the original 251 also illustrated these alternate-color secret rares.
