The First Crystal Pokémon
Aquapolis introduced the Crystal Type mechanic in January 2003, and Kingdra was one of the original three. Crystal Pokémon are Colorless by default but change type when you attach specific Energy — Kingdra shifts between Water, Fire, and Fighting depending on the energy placed on it.
The Crystal cards filled the same niche as Neo-era Shining Pokémon — ultra-rare secret cards hidden beyond the set's official count. But where Shining cards featured alternate-color Pokémon, Crystal cards featured a prismatic, multi-energy design that was entirely unique to the e-Card era.
Kingdra was an inspired choice for the Crystal treatment. The Dragon Pokémon's elegant, serpentine form translates beautifully to Saitou's tri-color composition, with swirling water, fire, and fighting energy creating a kaleidoscopic background.
