The Card That Brought Families Together
In May 1998, the Pokémon Company held the "Parent/Child Mega Battle" — a tournament where children had to team up with a parent to compete. Winners received this exclusive holographic Kangaskhan card, making it one of the most heartwarming origin stories in all of collecting.
Kangaskhan — a Pokémon literally defined by its maternal bond, carrying its child in a pouch — was the perfect choice for a parent-child event. The card's rarity stems from its tiny distribution: only tournament winners received copies.
An estimated 46 copies exist. In 2020, a high-grade copy sold for $150,100 at auction, cementing the Family Event Kangaskhan as one of the most valuable Pokémon cards in the world.
